What is Vaginal Thrush?
Vaginal thrush is a common yeast infection affecting women. Thrush is not considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI) although it can be passed on through sex.
The yeast that causes thrush, a fungus called candida, is usually present in the vagina but in small numbers. If the balance between the healthy bacteria and yeast cells is disrupted, the yeast can multiply and cause an infection.
The main symptom of vaginal thrush is a thick creamy discharge with a similar appearance to “cottage cheese”. The discharge does not smell but thrush can sometimes be very itchy or sore. Urinating and sex can also be uncomfortable or painful.
Thrush is more common if you are taking antibiotics or when you are pregnant. People with diabetes are also more likely to get thrush as well as people who are on medicine that suppresses their immune system.
Thrush can also affect other areas of skin, such as the armpits and groin, plus thrush also affects men.
What Vaginal Thrush Treatments are available?
The most common vaginal thrush treatments are antifungals medicines. There are a number of different treatment types. For example:
- Creams for applying to the infected area
- Pessaries for inserting into the vagina
- A single capsule to swallow (sometimes a second dose is necessary)
