Dermatitis is any irritated skin. Often the cause of the irritation is from household cleaning products including washing up liquid or perfumed soaps. The stronger the chemical and the more exposure you’ve had to it, the more severe the irritation can be.

Allergic contact dermatitis is the allergy form of dermatitis. This is where you have an allergic reaction to the substance you have come into contact with. You are more likely to get allergic contact dermatitis if you have allergies, such as hayfever or asthma. Things like nickel jewellery or hair dyes can trigger allergic contact dermatitis.

Both forms of dermatitis cause red, dry and itchy skin that can become inflamed and sore.

What dermatitis treatments are available?

For irritant dermatitis, it is best to just avoid contact with the irritant, by wearing gloves when cleaning, for example. Keeping the skin clean and patting dry (rather than rubbing dry) and using simple moisturisers can help clear up dermatitis.

For more severe cases, dermatitis is easily treatable with skin creams containing a steroid called hydrocortisone. This is a mild steroid cream that is applied in small amounts to the skin to help it heal.

Stronger steroid creams are also available on prescription from you pharmacist.
